Carrots

Daucus Carota

Perfect for snowman noses and Christmas morning reindeers, the carrot is an all-time favourite.

  • Spacing: 25.0 cm
  • Days to germination: 8
  • Days to maturity: 60

Carrots are difficult plant to germinate but so delicious and satisfying when grown in your own garden. Cover with a tiny bit of loose soil (a fine compost or sifted woodchip is a great idea), then keep them moist (but not drowned!) after planting until they come up. You can cover them with cardboard and check every day (at least from day 6 onwards) and once they're up, take the cardboard off and give them a nice drink. Once you get the knack for it it becomes much easier.

Delicious in so many things, the carrot is super versatile in the kitchen. Chop and throw in the slow cooker, grow out to half size for delicious munchable carrots, use the tops in a pesto, or grate and add into a salad - the list goes on. But our favourite - baby carrots with the tops cut with some length, tossed in a honey and olive oil mix and roasted up - too delicious.

Our Carrot Variety - The Classic

A take on the classic "All Seasons" variety, the classic is aptly named. This is your go-to carrot variety, affordable seeds which produce slender long carrots in a deep friable (workable) soil.

This variety will fork if there's too much nitrogen in the soil. It also requires a nice, deep workable soil, so make sure you fork your soil very well and deep if it's a compact clay (without turning it over if possible!).

We hope you enjoy this classic variety as much as we do.

How long between plantings of Carrots should I wait to get continual harvests?

In short: 4 weeks

Plant a large amount of heirloom seed and they will mature at different times. If you plant a large amount of carrots every 4 weeks, you will be set with continual harvests from your garden. Carrots are also great for storage, although generally out of scale for the home gardener, you can plant a very large amount of carrot seed, harvest when ripe and they've started to harden, and store in a cool dry spot to keep throughout the year.
